⚠️ Heavy Negative Marking: -1 Per Wrong on 4-Mark Questions
BSSC uses 4 marks per correct and -1 per wrong answer. This is a 25% penalty rate — the highest in Bihar government exams. A wrong answer costs you 1 mark PLUS the 4 marks you didn't get = effectively -5 marks relative to a correct answer. Accuracy over volume is critical.
📋 Prelims is Qualifying — Mains Marks Decide Final Rank
BSSC Prelims shortlists candidates (1:5 ratio for CGL Mains). Prelims marks NOT counted in final merit. Final selection based on Mains marks. Both Hindi paper and GS paper count in Mains merit — unlike Bihar Police SI where Hindi is qualifying only.
🗂️ CGL vs Inter Level: Same Pattern, Different Eligibility
BSSC CGL (graduate-level) and Inter Level (12th-pass) have identical exam structures. The content difficulty differs - CGL is at graduation level, Inter Level at Class 12 level. CGL posts (Officer/Clerk grade) carry higher salary than Inter Level posts.
🎯 Practice Mock Tests - Section-wise

⚠️ BSSC Negative Marking - 4 Marks Correct, -1 Wrong
BSSC's marking scheme is the most consequential among Bihar exams. Understanding the exact mathematics of when to attempt vs skip is critical to maximise your score.
📊 The BSSC Marking Scheme Explained
✅ Correct answer: +4 marks
❌ Wrong answer: -1 mark
⬜ Unattempted: 0 marks
Key ratio: Each correct = 4 marks. Each wrong = -1 mark. The ratio of penalty to reward is 1:4. If you have a 1-in-4 chance (25%) of being correct, expected value = 0. If you can eliminate even one option, expected value becomes positive.
🎯 When to Attempt, When to Skip
✅ ATTEMPT: Questions you are confident about
Even 70% confidence gives expected value: 0.7×4 - 0.3×1 = 2.8 - 0.3 = +2.5
🔶 ATTEMPT: Can eliminate 2 of 4 options
50% chance remaining → expected value: 0.5×4 - 0.5×1 = 2 - 0.5 = +1.5
⏭️ SKIP: Completely uncertain (no elimination possible)
Random guess: 0.25×4 - 0.75×1 = 1 - 0.75 = +0.25 (marginally positive — but risky)
📉 Impact of Wrong Answers
AttemptedCorrectWrongScore
15012030480-30=450
12010020400-20=380
15010050400-50=350
100955380-5=375
Attempting all 150 with 80% accuracy beats attempting 100 with 95% accuracy (450 vs 375). Volume matters - but accuracy is more efficient per question.
📊 BSSC Prelims Pattern - Qualifying Stage (Both CGL and Inter Level)

Key difference from Bihar Police SI: In BSSC CGL, the Hindi Mains paper (Paper I, 400 marks) counts towards final merit. In Bihar Police SI, the Hindi paper is qualifying only. This means for BSSC, strong Hindi performance gives a significant 400-mark advantage — candidates with excellent Hindi grammar and comprehension have a decisive edge.

💡 Expert Preparation Tips
From our faculty who have guided thousands of BSSC CGL and Inter Level selected candidates
1
The -1 negative marking with 4-mark questions is uniquely impactful — build an accuracy-first strategy - BSSC's 4 marks correct, -1 wrong scheme differs from SSC (2/-0.5) and UPSC (2/-0.67). The ratio of penalty to reward is 1:4. Mathematically, if you have a 25% chance (random guess among 4 options), expected value is exactly 0 - so random guessing gives neither benefit nor loss on average. But wrong answers actively hurt you relative to skipping. The key insight: attempts based on elimination (even eliminating one of four options to get 1-in-3 chance) now have positive expected value of 4/3 - 1×2/3 = 1.33 - 0.67 = +0.67 per question. Build a habit of elimination-based reasoning rather than pure knowledge recall. Practice discarding obviously wrong options first, then reasoning among remaining options.
2
Hindi Mains Paper I (400 marks) is 40% of total Mains score — the highest-weight paper in BSSC - Unlike Bihar Police SI where the Hindi Mains paper is qualifying only, in BSSC CGL the General Hindi Mains Paper I (400 marks) counts fully towards final merit. Out of 1000 total Mains marks, Hindi alone is 400 marks (40%). A candidate who scores 350/400 in Hindi and 400/600 in GS Paper II gets 750/1000. A candidate who scores 250/400 in Hindi but 500/600 in GS Paper II also gets 750/1000. Hindi is as important as the entire GS paper. Candidates with strong Hindi grammar backgrounds have a natural advantage. Those who are weaker in Hindi should dedicate proportional preparation time — specifically to Sandhi, Samas, Karak rules (consistently highest-frequency grammar topics) and Paryayvachi/Vilom vocabulary lists.
3
Bihar-specific content in GS section is systematically higher than national GK content — prepare it as primary, not supplementary - BSSC General Studies section consistently emphasises Bihar geography, Bihar history, Bihar polity, Bihar economy and Bihar current affairs. Questions on Pataliputra as Maurya capital, Champaran Satyagraha as Gandhi's first civil disobedience, Nalanda university, Chhath Puja significance, Madhubani painting, Vaishali as first republic, Kosi as "sorrow of Bihar", Muzaffarpur lychee, Bhagalpur silk and Bihar government's Saat Nishchay schemes appear regularly. A candidate who invests dedicated time in Bihar GK alongside standard national GK will consistently outperform candidates who treat Bihar content as a footnote. Prepare Bihar GK as a full subject — at minimum one month of dedicated study using Bihar-specific preparation books.
4
Prelims is qualifying only but the 1:5 shortlisting ratio means you need a competitive score, not just any passing score - BSSC shortlists candidates for Mains at a 1:5 ratio — 5 candidates per vacancy. For 1,883 CGL vacancies, approximately 9,415 candidates are called for Mains. With lakhs of applicants, the Prelims cut-off is competitive. Simply "passing" with low marks won't guarantee Mains shortlisting. Target 400+ out of 600 in Prelims (67%+) for General category comfort zone. This requires performing well in all three sections — strong GS knowledge, solid Science and Maths fundamentals and good Reasoning speed. Since Prelims marks don't count in final selection, you don't need to maximise Prelims — but you do need to clear the competitive cut-off comfortably. Use Prelims performance data from previous years as benchmarks.
5
Time management in Prelims (2 hours 15 min for 150 questions) requires sectional allocation planning - 135 minutes for 150 questions = 54 seconds per question average. With 4-mark rewards and -1 penalties, spending 3+ minutes on a single uncertain question wastes time that could yield marks from 3-4 easier questions. Time allocation strategy: Section 1 GS (35-40 min for 50 questions), Section 2 Science+Maths (45-50 min for 50 questions — Maths takes longest), Section 3 Reasoning (25-30 min for 50 questions). Reserve 10-15 minutes for review and uncertain questions. Practice full-length timed mock tests with this time allocation from 2 months before the exam. Never attempt in section order if you're stronger in a particular area — attempt strongest section first to build confidence and bank marks early.
6
BSSC CGL and BPSC CCE preparation overlaps 60-70% — target both simultaneously if eligible - BPSC CCE (Combined Competitive Examination) and BSSC CGL both require graduation and test similar GS content — Bihar History, Geography, Polity, Economy, Science and Current Affairs. The key differences: BPSC CCE recruits for higher-level posts (SDO, BDO, Block Officer - Pay Level 10+) vs BSSC CGL (Clerk, DEO, Asst. - Pay Level 4-6); BPSC CCE has no negative marking in Prelims (BSSC has -1); BPSC CCE is more competitive with fewer vacancies; BPSC CCE age limit is 20-37 (General) vs BSSC CGL 21-37. If you are eligible for both, apply for both and use the same Bihar GK, History and Science preparation base for both exams. BPSC offers higher salary and prestige; BSSC offers more vacancies and a different, more predictable pattern.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions - BSSC 2025-26
Most searched questions about BSSC CGL and Inter Level exam pattern, negative marking and career answered
BSSC CGL (Combined Graduate Level) and BSSC Inter Level are both conducted by BSSC for different qualification levels. CGL requires graduation and recruits for graduate-level posts like Assistant Section Officer, Data Entry Operator, Planning Assistant, Junior Statistical Assistant and Auditor at Pay Level 4-6. Inter Level requires 12th pass (Intermediate) and recruits for clerical/support posts like Lower Division Clerk, Panchayat Secretary, Revenue Worker at Pay Level 2-3. Both exams have identical structure - 150 MCQs Prelims (600 marks, 4/-1) and a two-paper Mains - but content difficulty differs: CGL is at graduation level, Inter Level at Class 10-12 level. Apply based on your qualification: if you have a degree, apply for CGL for higher salary posts. If you have completed 12th and are waiting for graduation results, apply for Inter Level. If you have a degree and are under 25, you can apply for both - Inter Level doesn't prohibit over-qualified candidates in most cycles.
BSSC uses 4 marks per correct answer and -1 per wrong answer, with 0 for unattempted. The key mathematical principle: if you have a pure 1-in-4 random chance of being correct, the expected value is exactly 0 (0.25×4 - 0.75×1 = 1 - 0.75 = 0.25, marginally positive). This means random guessing is slightly beneficial on average, but individual wrong answers can significantly hurt your rank. The recommended strategy is a three-tier approach: (1) Questions you know well — attempt confidently; (2) Questions where you can eliminate one or two obviously wrong options — attempt from remaining choices (positive expected value even with 1-in-3 chance: 0.33×4 - 0.67×1 = 1.33 - 0.67 = +0.67); (3) Questions where you have absolutely no idea and cannot eliminate any option — skip rather than random guess, as the risk is not worth it for BSSC's heavier penalty structure. In practice, well-prepared candidates should attempt 120-140 out of 150 questions, leaving only genuinely unknown questions unattempted.
Yes - General Hindi Mains Paper I (400 marks) counts fully in the final BSSC CGL merit. This is completely unlike Bihar Police SI where the Hindi Mains paper is qualifying only. For BSSC CGL, the final merit is based on Mains Paper I (General Hindi, 400 marks) + Mains Paper II (General Studies/Science/Maths/Reasoning, 600 marks) = 1000 total. Hindi alone constitutes 40% of the entire Mains score. A strong performance in Hindi - say 350/400 - versus a weak performance of 250/400 is a 100-mark difference that is very difficult to compensate through GS Paper II alone. The Hindi Mains paper tests grammar (Sandhi, Samas, Karak, Vachan, Ling), vocabulary (Paryayvachi, Vilom, Muhavare), comprehension, error detection and fill in the blanks. Candidates must treat Hindi preparation with the same seriousness as GS preparation. For candidates from Hindi-medium backgrounds, this paper is a significant advantage. For English-medium candidates, dedicated Hindi grammar study from several months before Mains is essential.
BSSC has historically had irregular notification schedules with significant gaps between exam cycles. The CGL and Inter Level exams are not conducted on a fixed annual basis - they depend on vacancy accumulation and state government requisitions. However, BSSC has been increasingly active in recent years: the Inter Level 2025 notification was released for 12,199 vacancies, and CGL 2025 was notified for 1,883 posts with the exam scheduled for April 2026. In the past, gaps of 2-4 years between CGL cycles were common. The best way to stay updated is to regularly check bssc.bihar.gov.in and subscribe to Bihar government exam notification services. Since BSSC, BPSC and BPSSC all conduct separate exams, Bihar government job aspirants typically prepare for multiple commissions simultaneously - BSSC CGL, BPSC CCE and BPSSC SI - to maximise their selection opportunities without waiting for any single exam cycle.

BSSC CGL and Inter Level 2025-26 - Complete Guide: 4 Marks/-1 Negative Marking, Prelims and Mains Pattern, Bihar GK and Free Mock Tests

The BSSC (Bihar Staff Selection Commission) conducts two major recruitment exams: BSSC CGL (Combined Graduate Level) for graduate-level government posts (1,883 vacancies, exam April 2026) and BSSC Inter Level for 12th-pass government posts (12,199 vacancies). Both exams follow identical structure: Prelims (150 MCQs, 600 marks, 4 marks per correct, -1 per wrong, 2 hours 15 min, qualifying only) → Mains (Paper I General Hindi 100Q/400 marks + Paper II GS/Science/Maths/Reasoning 150Q/600 marks = 1000 total, both count in merit) → Document Verification. BSSC's unique 4/-1 marking scheme requires careful selective attempting — skip questions where no option can be eliminated to avoid the -1 penalty.

Key differentiator: BSSC Mains Hindi Paper I (400 marks) counts in final merit — unlike Bihar Police SI where Hindi is qualifying only. Hindi constitutes 40% of Mains marks, making it the highest-weight single paper. The 3-section Prelims structure covers: Section 1 General Studies (50Q/200 marks — Bihar GK, Indian History, Geography, Polity, Economy, Current Affairs), Section 2 General Science and Mathematics (50Q/200 marks — Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Arithmetic, Data Interpretation), Section 3 Comprehension/Logic/Reasoning/Mental Ability (50Q/200 marks).
