CDS - The Graduate Route to All Three Armed Forces
CDS is the only UPSC examination that allows graduates from any stream to join the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force as commissioned officers through a single written exam. Unlike NDA (restricted to 12th pass students aged 16.5-19.5), CDS accepts graduates up to age 25 - giving working professionals, post-graduates, and those who missed NDA a clear path to the armed forces. The CDS written exam requires only Class 10 level Mathematics - making it significantly more accessible than NDA. Commissioned officers start at Level 10 pay (Rs.56,100 Basic Pay) plus Military Service Pay of Rs.15,500 - with total effective compensation exceeding Rs.90,000 per month.
📊 Written Exam Pattern - IMA, INA and AFA
3-paper pattern for IMA, INA, and AFA entries. Each paper is 100 marks and 2 hours. Math is at Class 10 level only.

Negative marking is 1/3 of the marks assigned to each question. Merit is based on total written score (300 marks) for shortlisting to SSB.

🎖️ What is OTA and SSC?
OTA Chennai grants Short Service Commission (SSC) - an initial commission for 10 years (extendable to 14 years). After 10-14 years, SSC officers can apply for a Permanent Commission (PC) through a selection board. SSC officers who are not granted PC are given a gratuity and pension benefit at exit. OTA is open to both men and women (women entry through SSC Women Non-Technical).
💡 OTA Advantage - No Math Required
OTA entry requires only English and GK - no Mathematics paper. This makes OTA the most accessible CDS entry for candidates from Arts and Commerce backgrounds who are strong in English and GK but weak in Math. The OTA entry also has the highest age limit (up to 25 years) among all CDS entries. SSC Women entry through OTA is also exclusively for IMA/OTA (Army) with no Math requirement.
🎖️ SSB Interview - 5-Day Selection Process
The SSB is conducted at Services Selection Boards after written exam shortlisting. It carries 300 marks for CDS (vs 900 for NDA). Final merit = Written 300 + SSB 300 = 600 marks.
📅 Day 1 - Screening
Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) test
Picture Perception and Discussion Test (PPDT)
Candidates not recommended at screening are sent back
Only screened-in candidates continue to Days 2-5
📅 Days 2-3 - Psychological Tests
Thematic Apperception Test (TAT)
Word Association Test (WAT)
Situation Reaction Test (SRT) - 60 situations
Self Description Test (SD)
Personal Interview with Interviewing Officer
📅 Days 3-4 - Group Testing
Group Discussion (GD)
Group Planning Exercise (GPE)
Progressive Group Task (PGT)
Half Group Task (HGT)
Lecturette - 3-minute talk
Individual Obstacles (IO)
Command Task
Final Group Task (FGT)
📅 Day 5 - Conference and Result
Conference - all three assessors (GTO, IO, Psychologist) discuss each candidate holistically
Final recommendation announced
Recommended candidates proceed to medical examination
SSB carries 300 marks in CDS final merit
Final merit = Written (300) + SSB (300) = 600 marks
✅ In CDS, the written exam and SSB are equally weighted at 300 marks each - unlike NDA where both are 900 marks each. This means a strong written score has a significant impact on final merit in CDS. A candidate who scores 260/300 in written and 200/300 in SSB will rank higher than one who scores 220/300 in written and 220/300 in SSB. Invest heavily in written preparation while building SSB personality simultaneously.

CDS Officer Pay Structure
Commissioned officers from all CDS academies start at Pay Level 10 (Rs.56,100 Basic Pay) + Military Service Pay Rs.15,500/month. Total gross compensation including Transport Allowance, HRA or free accommodation, and service-specific allowances (Field Area Allowance, Flying Pay for IAF pilots, Sea Duty Allowance for Navy) ranges from Rs.90,000 to Rs.1,20,000+ per month at Lieutenant level. During training at the academy, cadets receive a stipend of approximately Rs.56,100 per month. All allowances are in addition to this - and several military allowances are tax-exempt, further increasing the effective take-home pay.
📚 CDS Syllabus - Subject-wise Topics
All three papers carry equal marks (100 each). English and GK together are more scoring for most candidates than Math.
📝
English (Paper I)
🔥 120 Questions - 100 Marks - Critical for OTA and IMA
Fill in the Blanks - Prepositions, Articles, Conjunctions
Idioms and Phrases
Para Jumbles and Sentence Ordering
Spotting Errors
Cloze Test
💡 Pro Tip: CDS English is at graduate level - harder than SSC CHSL but comparable to SSC CGL Tier 2. Reading Comprehension is the highest-weightage topic. Read one quality English newspaper daily - The Hindu or Indian Express editorial pages are the most relevant for CDS English preparation.
🌍
General Knowledge (Paper II)
120 Questions - 100 Marks
Defence and National Security (Unique to CDS)
Indian Defence - Army, Navy, Air Force structure and history
Military ranks, insignia, and uniforms
Defence operations, exercises, and achievements
Nuclear doctrine, DRDO, defence acquisitions
Gallantry awards - Param Vir Chakra, Vir Chakra, Ashoka Chakra
Border disputes, national security policy
Static GK and Current Affairs
History - Ancient, Medieval, Modern India, World Wars
Geography - India and World Physical Geography
Polity - Constitution, Parliament, Judiciary
Economy - Basic concepts, Budget, Key indicators
Science and Technology - Space, Defence technology, Recent developments
Current Affairs - National and International (Last 9-12 months)
Sports, Awards, Important Appointments
💡 Pro Tip: CDS GK has a uniquely strong bias toward defence and national security topics - military history, defence operations, gallantry awards, and DRDO achievements. These are not covered in SSC or banking GK preparation. Build a dedicated defence GK module with recent military exercises, weapon inductions, and medals awarded.
Mensuration - Area, Perimeter, Volume of basic shapes
Trigonometry - Basic ratios, Heights and Distances
Statistics - Mean, Median, Mode, Bar charts, Pie charts
💡 Pro Tip: CDS Math is strictly Class 10 level - no Calculus, no Vectors, no Matrices (unlike NDA). This is significantly easier than NDA Math. Geometry and Trigonometry together typically contribute 30-40% of Math questions. Candidates from Arts/Commerce streams should spend 4-6 weeks on focused Class 10 Math revision.

Best For
Graduates from any stream who missed NDA and want all 3 services with accessible Math requirement
Class 12 students with strong Math and Physics targeting the armed forces early
Graduates specifically targeting Indian Air Force
🎯 Our Recommendation: CDS is the most accessible graduate-level defence exam in India. Unlike NDA (requires strong Class 11-12 Math) and AFCAT (Air Force only), CDS with its Class 10 Math and any-stream eligibility gives graduates from Arts, Commerce, and Science backgrounds an equal footing. If you missed NDA and have graduated, CDS should be your first target for all three services. Apply for IMA for a Permanent Commission if you want a full career, and additionally apply for OTA as a backup (no Math required for OTA). Simultaneously, if you are interested in the Air Force specifically, appear for AFCAT alongside CDS.

ℹ️ IMA written cut-off is typically around 117-124 out of 300 (39-41%). OTA written cut-off is around 92-98 out of 200 (46-49% - higher percentage because Math is excluded). IMA final cut-off (written + SSB) is around 265-278 out of 600 (44-46%). Data is indicative - always refer to official UPSC notifications for exact figures. Target 160+ for IMA written and 120+ for OTA written for a comfortable margin.
💡 Expert Tips - Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
From our faculty who have trained thousands of CDS successful candidates
1
CDS Math is Class 10 level only - Arts and Commerce candidates have no disadvantage here - Unlike NDA where Math is at Class 11-12 level (Calculus, Vectors, Matrices), CDS Math (Paper III) is strictly Class 10 Elementary Mathematics - Arithmetic, basic Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry at Class 10 NCERT level. An Arts or Commerce graduate who revises Class 10 Math for 4-6 weeks can score 70+ out of 100 in this paper. Many Arts stream candidates assume they cannot clear CDS because of the Math paper and never apply. This is a critical misconception - CDS Math is by design accessible for candidates from all streams. If you have a graduation degree and aspire to the armed forces, do not let Math fear stop you from attempting CDS.
2
Defence and National Security GK is the highest-value unique topic in CDS - most candidates skip it - CDS GK has a distinctly stronger defence bias than any other competitive exam. Military exercises (Shakti, Tasman Saber, Malabar), weapon system inductions (Tejas, INS Vikrant, S-400), gallantry awards (Param Vir Chakra recipients and their operations), military history (Indo-Pakistan wars, Kargil), DRDO projects, and national security events are tested regularly. Standard SSC and banking GK books cover only 60-70% of CDS GK. Build a dedicated defence GK notebook updated monthly with Indian defence news. This topic alone can add 10-15 marks to your GK score - a decisive margin at the cut-off level.
3
Apply for both IMA and OTA in the same notification - the GK and English preparation is identical - CDS allows candidates to apply for multiple entries in the same notification. IMA (Permanent Commission) requires 3 papers including Math; OTA (Short Service Commission) requires only English and GK. If you are weak in Math, applying for OTA gives you a high-quality defence career without needing to clear Paper III. If you are strong in Math, apply for both IMA and OTA - the OTA shortlisting uses only your English and GK scores, giving you an additional SSB call. Never limit yourself to one academy when a single application can give multiple SSB opportunities.
4
In CDS, written exam and SSB are equally weighted - a strong written score matters enormously - CDS written carries 300 marks and SSB carries 300 marks - total 600. In NDA, both written and SSB are 900 each but the absolute number is higher. The key implication for CDS is that improving written score by even 20-30 marks (achievable through focused preparation) gives a proportionally large final merit advantage. Many CDS aspirants focus entirely on SSB preparation after clearing the written, neglecting the fact that maximising written score is just as important as SSB performance. Target 160+ in written (IMA) to build a buffer that survives even a moderate SSB performance.
5
CDS English is harder than SSC English - start with The Hindu editorial from Day 1 - CDS English Paper is at graduate level - Reading Comprehension passages are longer and more analytical than those in SSC exams, vocabulary questions test less common words, and grammar questions test nuanced usage. The most effective preparation strategy is daily reading of quality English - The Hindu editorial and Indian Express Explained section are ideal. Read one editorial daily, note unfamiliar words, and practise paraphrasing the argument in your own words. This builds Reading Comprehension speed, vocabulary, and grammatical intuition simultaneously. Start this habit from the first day of preparation - it cannot be replaced by question practice alone.
6
Appear for both CDS I and CDS II every year - never miss a cycle within your age window - CDS is conducted twice a year. Your age window for IMA is 19-24 years for General category - approximately 10 attempts over 5 years if you start at 19. For OTA it is 19-25 years - 12 attempts. Many candidates skip cycles waiting to "feel ready" - this is a strategic mistake. The SSB experience from each attempt is irreplaceable - repeated SSB exposure dramatically improves your recommendation chances. Candidates who clear CDS written repeatedly but fail SSB in initial attempts almost always improve significantly in later attempts. Never miss a CDS cycle for which you are age-eligible.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions - UPSC CDS 2026
Most searched questions about UPSC CDS answered by our experts
Officers commissioned through CDS start at Pay Level 10 (Rs.56,100 Basic Pay per month) plus Military Service Pay of Rs.15,500 per month. Gross monthly compensation including Transport Allowance, HRA or free accommodation, and service-specific allowances ranges from Rs.90,000 to Rs.1,20,000+ per month at the Lieutenant/Sub-Lieutenant/Flying Officer level. Additional allowances include Field Area Allowance (for border and high-altitude postings), Flying Pay for Air Force pilots (Rs.25,000+/month), Sea Duty Allowance for Navy officers, Kit Maintenance Allowance, and ration allowance. Several of these allowances are tax-exempt, making the effective net take-home significantly higher than a civilian government employee at the same basic pay level. During training at the academy, cadets receive approximately Rs.56,100/month as stipend.
Yes - Arts and Commerce graduates can fully apply for CDS IMA and OTA entries. The eligibility for IMA (Indian Military Academy) and OTA (Officers Training Academy) requires only graduation in any stream from a recognised university. There is no requirement for Physics or Mathematics in graduation or Class 12 for these entries. For INA (Navy) and AFA (Air Force), Physics and Mathematics at Class 12 level are compulsory - but IMA and OTA are fully open to Arts, Commerce, Humanities, Law, and any other graduates. The Math paper (Paper III) in CDS is at Class 10 level - completely manageable for Arts/Commerce graduates who revise Class 10 Math. OTA entry does not even require Paper III - only English and GK. Arts and Commerce graduates should absolutely apply for CDS and especially OTA.
Permanent Commission (PC) means a full career in the armed forces until the mandatory retirement age - approximately 54-60 years depending on rank. PC officers are eligible for full pension, which is a defined benefit for life after retirement. IMA, INA, and AFA entries in CDS grant Permanent Commission. Short Service Commission (SSC) through OTA is an initial commission for 10 years extendable to 14 years. After completing SSC tenure, officers can apply for Permanent Commission through a selection board - those granted PC continue their career, while those not granted PC receive an ex-gratia payment, resettlement assistance, and a terminal gratuity. SSC officers who complete their full tenure receive pension benefits proportional to service. The career, pay, and allowances during service are identical for PC and SSC officers at the same rank - the difference is only in the post-service benefits and career length.
Yes - women can apply for UPSC CDS for OTA Chennai (Short Service Commission Women Non-Technical entry). The SSC Women Non-Technical entry through OTA is specifically for women candidates - it requires graduation in any stream, age limit is 19-25 years, and the written exam consists of only English and GK (no Math paper). Women commissioned through OTA serve as officers in the Indian Army in non-combat roles including Education, Signals, Intelligence, Logistics, Judge Advocate General (JAG), and Army Educational Corps. Women can also appear for INA (Navy) and AFA (Air Force) entries in CDS subject to meeting the specific eligibility criteria and physical standards for those services. The SSB process is identical for male and female candidates.
UPSC CDS has no official attempt limit - the age window determines how many times you can appear. CDS is conducted twice a year. For IMA entry (age 19-24 for General), you can appear in up to 10 cycles over 5 years. For OTA entry (age 19-25), you can appear in up to 12 cycles. For AFA entry (age 20-24), you can appear in up to 8 cycles. UPSC does not count CDS attempts separately from other UPSC exams. The practical strategy is to appear in every CDS cycle for which you are age-eligible - missing cycles wastes your limited attempt window. Many successful CDS selectees clear the written multiple times before receiving SSB recommendation and medical clearance - persistence within the age window is the key strategy.
No - CDS written is significantly easier than NDA written in terms of Mathematics. NDA Paper 1 is entirely Class 11-12 Mathematics (Calculus, Vectors, Matrices, Trigonometry) at 300 marks. CDS Paper III is Class 10 Elementary Mathematics at 100 marks. For the common subjects, CDS English and GK are at a broadly similar difficulty level to NDA GAT English and GK - both are graduate-level assessments. The overall written difficulty comparison: NDA is harder due to the demanding Math paper. However, the competitive environment is different - NDA has fewer vacancies relative to applicants in the 16.5-19.5 age group, while CDS has a larger pool of graduates competing for similar positions. Both exams require serious preparation - the difference is the Math level required.
CDS commissioned officers follow the standard armed forces promotion ladder. In the Indian Army (IMA/OTA route): Lieutenant (on commissioning) - Captain (2 years) - Major (6 years) - Lieutenant Colonel (13 years, time-based) - Colonel (26 years, selection-based) - Brigadier (selection) - Major General (selection) - Lieutenant General (selection) - General (Chief of Army Staff). Pay progresses from Level 10 (Lieutenant) through Level 13 (Brigadier) and above. In the Indian Navy and Air Force, equivalent ranks and promotion timelines apply with slight variations. Officers are posted across India and abroad, with peacetime postings, field area deployments, and foreign exchange programmes forming part of the career. The combination of pay, allowances, prestige, adventure, and post-retirement benefits makes the armed forces officer career one of the most respected in India.

UPSC CDS 2026 - Complete Guide: Eligibility, Exam Pattern for IMA, INA, AFA and OTA, SSB Interview, Syllabus and Free Mock Tests
The UPSC CDS (Combined Defence Services) exam 2026 is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission twice a year (CDS I in February and CDS II in September) and is the premier graduate-level entry route into the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force as a commissioned officer. With 500+ vacancies per cycle across Indian Military Academy (IMA) Dehradun, Indian Naval Academy (INA) Ezhimala, Air Force Academy (AFA) Hyderabad, and Officers Training Academy (OTA) Chennai, CDS is open to graduates from any stream for IMA and OTA entries (age 19-25). Unlike NDA which requires strong Class 11-12 Mathematics, CDS Math (Paper III) is at Class 10 level only - making CDS accessible for Arts, Commerce, and Humanities graduates who have been excluded from NDA.
The CDS written exam has two patterns: For IMA, INA, and AFA entries - 3 papers of 100 marks each (English 120 questions, General Knowledge 120 questions, Elementary Mathematics 100 questions) totalling 300 marks in 6 hours. For OTA entry - only 2 papers (English and GK, no Mathematics) totalling 200 marks in 4 hours. After written shortlisting, candidates appear for a 5-day SSB Interview worth 300 marks. Final merit = Written (300) + SSB (300) = 600 marks total. Written cut-off for IMA is typically 117-124 out of 300 (approximately 40%).
Our free UPSC CDS mock tests cover all 4 subject areas - General Knowledge and Awareness (History, Geography, Polity, Economics, Science and Technology, Defence GK, Current Affairs), Numerical and Mathematical Ability (Class 10 Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Mensuration), General Studies (History, Geography, Polity, Economics chapter-wise), and English Language (Reading Comprehension, Grammar, Vocabulary, Error Detection, Cloze Test) - with chapter-wise tests and full-length timed mock tests simulating the 3-paper CDS pattern with 1/3 negative marking - at zero cost, with no login required.
