India Post PA / SA is Recruited Through SSC CHSL - Not a Separate India Post Exam
Postal Assistant (PA) and Sorting Assistant (SA) posts are filled through the Staff Selection Commission's Combined Higher Secondary Level (SSC CHSL) examination. There is no separate India Post direct recruitment exam for PA/SA posts (unlike GDS which has a direct merit-based process). Candidates must apply for SSC CHSL, clear Tier 1, qualify Tier 2 with a high score, and pass the Typing Test. Post allocation including PA/SA is based on Tier 2 merit and candidate preference. Start preparation with the SSC CHSL framework - this page covers everything you need.
🎯 Practice Mock Tests - Section-wise
SSC CHSL tests 4 subjects in Tier 1 and 5 subjects in Tier 2. Practice each section below - Tier 2 English carries 135 marks and deserves the most focus.

⚠️ Key Points About Tier 1
  • Tier 1 is qualifying only - marks do not count in final merit
  • Used only for shortlisting candidates for Tier 2
  • Sectional cut-offs may apply - must qualify each section
  • 15-minute sectional timing expected in 2026
  • Conducted in multiple shifts - scores normalised
  • Negative marking: -0.5 per wrong answer
  • Score 130+ out of 200 comfortably to clear Tier 1
  • Preparation for Tier 1 automatically covers Tier 2 foundation
💡 Strategic note: Do not over-prepare for Tier 1. Clear it comfortably (aim for 130-140 out of 200) and redirect the bulk of your energy to Tier 2 which is the actual merit-deciding stage.
📝 Tier 2 Exam Pattern - Merit Deciding Stage
Tier 2 has two sessions conducted on the same day. Session 1 is objective MCQ (merit basis). Session 2 is the Typing Test (qualifying). Higher -1 negative marking in Tier 2.

⚠️ Tier 2 Negative Marking is -1 mark (double the Tier 1 penalty of -0.5). Each correct answer carries +3 marks in most Tier 2 sections. Do not guess randomly in Tier 2 - the penalty significantly impacts your score. Also, English (135 marks) is the single largest section in Tier 2 - it deserves the most preparation time.

⌨️ Typing Test - Qualifying Stage in Tier 2
Typing Test is qualifying for PA and SA posts. Failure in Typing Test means disqualification even with a top Tier 2 written score. Start typing practice from Day 1.
🇬🇧 English Typing
35 WPM
Words per minute - on computer keyboard
Passage of 2,000 key depressions. 10-15 minute test. Accuracy with allowable error percentage.
🇮🇳 Hindi Typing
30 WPM
Words per minute - on computer keyboard
Kruti Dev (Devnagari) font typically used. Candidate can choose Hindi or English medium.
📋 What is Tested
A printed passage is provided on screen. Candidate types it within the given time. Both speed and accuracy are measured. SSC allows a specified percentage of errors - errors beyond this limit lead to disqualification. The passage typically includes running text, numbers and punctuation marks.
💡 How to Prepare
Practice daily on TypingClub, Keybr or 10FastFingers. Start from Day 1 - do not delay typing practice until after Tier 1 results. For English, target 40+ WPM to have a buffer above the 35 WPM requirement. For Hindi, practice on Kruti Dev keyboard layout. 15-20 minutes of daily typing practice consistently over 3-4 months is sufficient to comfortably clear the typing test.

📈 Previous Year Cut-off Marks

ℹ️ Tier 1 cut-offs above are for shortlisting to Tier 2. PA/SA final selection from Tier 2 is more competitive - candidates who clear Tier 1 at cut-off but score low in Tier 2 will not get PA/SA post preference. Target Tier 2 score of 330+ out of 450 (73%+) for a realistic chance at PA/SA selection in General category.
💡 Expert Preparation Tips
From our faculty who have guided hundreds of SSC CHSL PA/SA successful candidates
1
Tier 1 is qualifying only - do not over-prepare it at the cost of Tier 2 - The most common strategic mistake in SSC CHSL / PA/SA preparation is spending equal time on Tier 1 and Tier 2. Tier 1 marks are not counted in final merit at all. A candidate who scores 190 in Tier 1 but 280 in Tier 2 ranks below a candidate who scores 140 in Tier 1 but 350 in Tier 2. Clear Tier 1 comfortably (aim for 135-145 out of 200 which is well above cut-off) and redirect 60-70% of your total preparation effort to Tier 2 - especially the English section which carries 135 marks and Maths which carries 90 marks.
2
English is 30% of Tier 2 merit marks - treat it as your highest-priority subject - In Tier 2 Session 1, English Language and Comprehension carries 45 questions and 135 marks - more than any other single subject. With -1 negative marking per wrong answer, a candidate who scores 40/45 correct in English (net 120+ marks) versus 30/45 correct (net 90 marks) has a 30-mark advantage in a single section. This gap is immense in a competitive exam. Many candidates neglect English focusing on Maths and Reasoning. Invert this - if you can score 115+ in English and 75+ in Maths/Reasoning, your Tier 2 rank will be very strong. Invest 40% of your Tier 2 preparation time in English.
3
Tier 2 negative marking is -1 (double Tier 1) - adjust your attempt strategy accordingly - Tier 1 has -0.5 per wrong answer while Tier 2 has -1 per wrong answer (for most sections). With +3 per correct answer in Tier 2, the expected value calculation changes significantly. In Tier 2, if you cannot eliminate at least one wrong option from four, skip the question. A wrong answer costs you 1 mark lost plus 3 marks not gained (opportunity cost of 4 marks). Target 90-100 confident correct attempts out of 150 in Tier 2 Session 1 rather than attempting all 150 with significant guessing.
4
Start typing practice alongside written exam preparation - not after Tier 1 results - Many PA/SA aspirants plan to "start typing after clearing Tier 1." The gap between Tier 1 and Tier 2 results is typically 2-3 months - not enough time to build 35 WPM from a base of 15-20 WPM. Building genuine typing speed and accuracy takes 3-5 months of consistent daily practice. Start now. Practise for 15-20 minutes every day from Day 1 of your preparation. Use TypingClub for structured lessons, then shift to 10FastFingers for speed practice. Track your WPM weekly and aim to be at 40+ WPM well before the Typing Test - this buffer protects you on exam day when nerves can reduce your speed.
5
Prepare India Post-specific GK as a separate topic - standard SSC GK books miss it - PA/SA selection through SSC CHSL sometimes includes India Post-specific questions in General Awareness about postal products (Speed Post, Business Parcel, e-Commerce logistics), India Post Payment Bank (IPPB), PLI (Postal Life Insurance), Finacle system at post offices, postal schemes for rural customers, and India Post's history and structure. Standard SSC GK books and coaching material designed for SSC CGL or SSC CHSL other posts do not cover this adequately. Spend 3-4 hours studying India Post's official website content, India Post's scheme and product list, and recent postal department news before your exam.
6
SSC CHSL preparation overlaps heavily with SSC CGL and SSC MTS - target all three simultaneously - The Tier 1 syllabus of SSC CHSL (Reasoning, Maths, English, GK) is practically identical to SSC MTS Tier 1 and similar to SSC CGL Tier 1. Candidates preparing for CHSL PA/SA should simultaneously apply for SSC MTS (which is easier) and consider SSC CGL (if eligible) as a higher-level parallel target. This multi-exam approach maximises your return on preparation investment. The Tier 2 patterns differ more between CGL and CHSL but the core subjects are the same. Register for all relevant SSC exams when notifications are released - your CHSL preparation is applicable across all of them.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions - India Post PA / SA 2026
Most searched questions about PA/SA recruitment, SSC CHSL and preparation answered by our experts
PA and SA posts under India Post are recruited through the Staff Selection Commission's SSC CHSL exam - there is no separate direct India Post PA/SA exam. India Post is the employing department but the recruitment process is conducted entirely by SSC. Candidates apply for SSC CHSL, appear for Tier 1 and Tier 2, clear the Typing Test, and then indicate post preference including PA/SA. Allocation is based on Tier 2 merit and preference. This is different from India Post GDS (Gramin Dak Sevak) which is a direct India Post merit-based engagement with no SSC involvement. PA/SA are regular permanent government employees; GDS receive TRCA and are not regular employees.
A Postal Assistant works at Head Post Offices or Sub Post Offices handling customer-facing counter operations - accepting mail, registered letters, speed post, parcels; managing Post Office Savings Bank accounts; selling NSC, PLI, KVP certificates; processing money orders; disbursing pensions and MNREGA wages; and handling all counter-level postal and financial services. A Sorting Assistant works at Mail Sorting Offices (MSOs), Speed Post Centres and Mail Processing Centres, primarily sorting incoming and outgoing mail and parcels and routing them to the correct delivery offices. Both posts are recruited through the same SSC CHSL exam and receive the same pay scale. The work environment and daily responsibilities differ significantly - PA work is public-facing at post offices while SA work is back-office mail processing.
For direct external recruitment to PA/SA posts, SSC CHSL is the standard route. However, there is also a Limited Departmental Competitive Examination (LDCE) conducted internally by India Post for its existing employees - specifically for GDS candidates who wish to be promoted to PA/SA. This LDCE has a different syllabus covering postal regulations, office procedures, accounts and general awareness specific to India Post. The LDCE is only open to existing India Post GDS employees meeting certain service duration criteria - it is not open to external candidates. If you are a fresh external candidate targeting PA/SA, SSC CHSL is the only route.
SSC CHSL PA/SA vacancies are circle-wise - when you apply, you can indicate state/region preferences. Vacancies from each postal circle are separately listed in the SSC CHSL notification. Candidates are allocated to circles based on their merit rank and circle preference. However, within the allocated circle, posting to a specific division or office is at the discretion of the Postal Administration. Most PA/SA candidates are posted within their home state circle if they listed it as preference and their merit rank allows it. Inter-circle transfers are possible after a certain service period through official transfer mechanisms.
If you clear the Tier 2 written exam with a high score but fail the Typing Test, you will be considered for other SSC CHSL posts that do not require a typing test - such as Data Entry Operator (DEO) in some departments, Lower Division Clerk (LDC) in some cases, or other central government posts that come under SSC CHSL but have no typing requirement. However, for PA/SA specifically, the Typing Test is mandatory and qualifying. Failure in Typing Test means you are ineligible for PA/SA even if your written score is high. This is why starting typing practice from Day 1 of preparation is essential - a last-minute effort in the 2-3 months before the Typing Test is often insufficient if you start from a very low base speed.
PA/SA and GDS represent fundamentally different levels of government employment. PA/SA are permanent regular central government employees at Pay Level 4 with basic pay starting at Rs.25,500 and gross salary around Rs.35,000-45,000 with full government benefits - NPS pension, HRA, TA, medical under CGHS, LTC, gratuity and career progression through departmental exams up to Superintendent and above. GDS receive TRCA starting at Rs.10,000-12,000 and are not regular employees - they get no HRA, no pension under NPS, no TA, and limited medical benefits. GDS can work towards PA/SA through the LDCE internal exam after meeting service requirements. In terms of job security, income, benefits and growth, PA/SA is significantly superior to GDS. Candidates who qualify for both should always prioritise PA/SA over GDS.

India Post PA / SA 2026 - Complete Guide: SSC CHSL Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Typing Test and Free Mock Tests

India Post Postal Assistant (PA) and Sorting Assistant (SA) posts are recruited through the Staff Selection Commission's Combined Higher Secondary Level (SSC CHSL) examination - not through a separate India Post exam. SSC CHSL 2026 notification is expected in April 2026 with Tier 1 tentatively in July-September 2026. The exam has two tiers: Tier 1 (100 MCQs, 200 marks, 60 minutes, -0.5 negative marking, qualifying only) covering General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude and English Language and Comprehension with 25 questions per section; and Tier 2 (objective MCQs + Typing Test, merit-deciding) with -1 negative marking covering Mathematical Abilities (30Q/90M), Reasoning (30Q/90M), English Language and Comprehension (45Q/135M - highest weight), General Awareness (25Q/75M) and Computer Knowledge (20Q/60M). Final merit is based only on Tier 2 score - Tier 1 marks are not counted.

The Typing Test in Tier 2 Session 2 is qualifying for PA/SA posts: 35 words per minute in English or 30 words per minute in Hindi. Failure in the Typing Test disqualifies candidates from PA/SA even with high Tier 2 written scores. Age limit is 18 to 27 years (with relaxations). Education is 12th pass. PA/SA are permanent central government employees at Pay Level 4 (Rs.25,500 to Rs.81,100) with full NPS pension, CGHS medical, HRA, TA and LTC benefits - unlike GDS who receive only TRCA. PA work involves counter operations at post offices including POSB accounts, NSC/PLI/PPF products, Speed Post and India Post Payment Bank services. SA work involves mail sorting at Mail Sorting Offices and Speed Post Centres.
