🗺️ Rajasthan GK is ~60% of Prelims
RPSC RAS Prelims paper is heavily weighted towards Rajasthan - History and Culture, Geography, Polity, Economy, Art, Folk Heritage, Current Affairs of Rajasthan. Standard national GK preparation alone is completely inadequate. Dedicated Rajasthan GK is the #1 priority.
⚠️ 5-Option OMR in Prelims - Mark Option 5 for Uncertain Questions
RPSC RAS Prelims uses a 5-option OMR with 1/3 negative for both wrong answers and blanks. Mark the 5th circle for uncertain questions to avoid penalty. Must darken at least 90% (135 of 150) questions - use Option 5 if unsure.
📝 Prelims Marks NOT in Final Merit
Prelims is a screening test only. Final merit = Mains (800) + Interview (100) = 900 marks. Prepare Mains-depth content from Day 1. Interview uniquely tests knowledge of Rajasthani culture - prepare this separately.
🎯 Practice Mock Tests - Subject-wise
RPSC RAS Prelims is ~60% Rajasthan GK and ~40% national GK + science + reasoning. Mains requires deep subject knowledge. Build both through our mock test series.

What Posts Does RPSC RAS Recruit For?
RPSC RAS fills prestigious Rajasthan state cadre Group A and Group B posts. Key posts include: Rajasthan Administrative Service (RAS) - SDM, Tehsildar equivalent; Rajasthan Tax Service (RTS) - commercial taxation; Rajasthan Police Service - DSP equivalent; Rajasthan Accounts Service (RAccS); Rajasthan Administrative Service (Block Development Officer); and 12+ other subordinate service posts including District Inspector (Cooperative), District Employment Officer, Child Development Project Officer (CDPO), Superintendent (Prison), and others. All are permanent Group A/B state government positions.
⚡ The 5-Option OMR Rule in RAS Prelims
Same 5-option system as REET. Blanks attract -1/3 penalty. Option 5 = safe unattempted. Must darken at least 90% of questions. Mastering this is critical.
📋 How the 5-Option OMR Works in RAS
Each RAS Prelims question has 5 options (1, 2, 3, 4, 5):
Options 1-4: The four answer choices
Option 5: "Unattempted" (safe marker)
Marking Option 1/2/3/4 correctly: Marks awarded (each question has specific marks)
Marking Option 1/2/3/4 incorrectly: -1/3 of the question's marks
Leaving blank (not darkening ANY circle): -1/3 penalty
Marking Option 5: 0 marks, no penalty - SAFE CHOICE
🎯 Optimal Strategy for RAS Prelims
✅ Questions you are CONFIDENT about:
Mark the correct option (1/2/3/4) directly. Full marks.
🔶 Can ELIMINATE 2+ options:
Mark your best guess. Expected positive value when you've narrowed to 2 options (50% chance of +marks vs -1/3).
⚠️ Completely UNCERTAIN:
Mark Option 5. Get 0 marks, no penalty. Far better than guessing randomly (-1/3 expected) or leaving blank (also -1/3).
⚠️ Mandatory Attempt Rule
RPSC RAS 2026 requires candidates to darken at least one circle per question. If more than 10% of questions (15+ out of 150) are completely left without any darkening, the candidate is disqualified.
Safe approach: Darken Option 5 for all questions you want to skip. This satisfies the mandatory attempt rule (0 marks, no penalty) and prevents disqualification. Never leave any OMR circle completely blank in RAS Prelims.
RPSC also gives 10 extra minutes at the end specifically to verify all questions have one circle darkened. Use this time to ensure Option 5 is darkened for any uncertain questions you may have left.
📊 RAS Prelims Pattern and Syllabus
Single paper. 150 MCQs, 200 marks, 3 hours. ~60% Rajasthan content. 1/3 negative marking. Screening only - marks not counted in merit. Aim for 120+ to safely clear.

🎯 Prelims Key Strategy Points
  • Aim for 120+ out of 200 marks for safe Prelims clearing (General category)
  • Rajasthan GK alone can give 80-90+ marks if mastered thoroughly
  • Previous year cut-offs: 90-110 for General; 70-90 for OBC; 60-80 for SC/ST
  • Strong Rajasthan-specific prep can compensate for weaker national GK
  • Use Option 5 (not blank) for completely uncertain questions
  • Prelims prep builds Mains foundation - don't prepare separately
  • RPSC RAS Prelims difficulty: moderate, Rajasthan-heavy paper
  • Previous year papers are the most useful preparation resource

Prelims cut-offs for shortlisting to Mains out of 200 marks. Final merit cut-offs much higher after Mains and Interview are included.
RAS CycleGEN/UR Cut-off (out of 200)OBCSCST
RAS 202195 - 10580 - 9065 - 7560 - 70
RAS 2023100 - 11082 - 9268 - 7862 - 72
RAS 2025 (Prelims Feb 2025)104 - 11585 - 9570 - 8064 - 74
RAS 2026 (Expected)105 - 11886 - 9871 - 8265 - 76
ℹ️ Cut-offs are indicative estimates from coaching institute analysis. RPSC officially releases cut-offs with results. Target 120+ in Prelims (General) for safe shortlisting given increasing competition. The 1/3 negative marking in Prelims significantly reduces effective scores compared to previous no-negative cycles.
💡 Expert Preparation Tips
From our faculty who have guided hundreds of RPSC RAS selected candidates across multiple cycles
1
Rajasthan GK is the most important single preparation area for RAS - invest 35-40% of total prep time here - About 60% of RAS Prelims questions are Rajasthan-specific. Each of the three GS Mains papers has 40-50% Rajasthan content. The interview explicitly evaluates Rajasthani culture knowledge. No other area gives the same overall return across all three stages of RAS. Candidates who master Rajasthan History (Rajput kingdoms, integration), Geography (Thar Desert, IGNP, rivers, minerals), Economy (ODOP, tourism, budget), Polity (Vidhan Parishad, Panchayati Raj first in Rajasthan, RPSC), Culture (folk dances, Phad painting, miniature schools, folk music communities) and Current Affairs (state schemes, budget, appointments) consistently outperform those who focus primarily on national GK content from UPSC-only preparation materials.
2
Prelims marks don't count - but Prelims preparation must be at Mains depth to avoid double work - RAS Prelims is screening only. Many aspirants spend the first 6-8 months exclusively on Prelims revision and then find Mains preparation rushed. The most efficient strategy is to study all subjects at Mains depth from Day 1 - this automatically covers Prelims since Prelims tests the same subjects at lesser depth. Read Rajasthan History in full for Mains; Prelims questions from that history will be answered as a by-product. Study Indian Constitution completely for Mains; Prelims Polity questions follow naturally. The additional preparation for Prelims is primarily speed (MCQ practice timing) and breadth of current affairs - both of which should be supplementary to a Mains-depth study foundation.
3
The 5-option rule in RAS Prelims requires specific strategy - treat Option 5 as your shield - RAS Prelims has 1/3 negative for wrong answers AND blanks - identical to the REET 2025 system. The 5th option (mark as unattempted) gives 0 marks with no penalty. For completely uncertain questions, Option 5 is strictly better than random guessing (which gives -1/3 expected) and better than leaving blank (also -1/3). Practice deciding between "confident attempt", "educated guess after elimination" and "mark Option 5" during mock tests so this three-tier strategy becomes automatic. Also note: the mandatory 90% attempt rule (must mark at least 135 out of 150) means always darkening either a number or Option 5 for every question. Never leave the OMR completely blank on any question.
4
RPSC RAS and UPSC CSE preparation overlaps 50-60% - targeting both is efficient for Rajasthan-domicile candidates - RPSC RAS GS syllabus (History, Geography, Polity, Economy, Environment) covers the same broad areas as UPSC CSE GS Papers I-III. The primary RAS-specific additions are the Rajasthan-specific content in all papers (35-40% of each paper) and the combined Hindi-English language paper. Candidates preparing for UPSC who hold Rajasthan domicile should absolutely apply for RPSC RAS simultaneously - the additional preparation needed is primarily Rajasthan-specific content (3-4 months' dedicated study) plus answer writing practice in the RAS descriptive format. The RAS upper age limit (40 years for General) is also significantly more generous than UPSC's 32 years, making RAS a viable long-term parallel track.
5
Mains answer writing in Hindi is critical - practice writing complete answers in Hindi from 6 months before Mains - RAS Mains has a Paper IV in General Hindi (including Hindi essay worth 40 marks). Additionally, GS Papers I-III allow Hindi or English medium, but most successful RAS candidates use Hindi medium and evaluators are primarily Hindi-medium-oriented. Many UPSC-track candidates prepare content excellently but struggle with Hindi answer writing quality in RAS Mains, losing 15-20% of potential marks. Start Hindi answer writing practice early: write 2-3 full RAS-style Hindi answers daily from 6 months before Mains. Practice Hindi essay writing on social and administrative themes. Separately, the Hindi Grammar section in Paper IV (Sandhi, Samas, Upsarg, Pratyay) requires 2-3 weeks of focused grammar study - do not assume fluency in Hindi means exam-level grammar knowledge.
6
Prepare specifically for the Rajasthani culture component in the RAS interview - The RPSC RAS interview guidelines explicitly mention that the panel will assess "knowledge of Rajasthani culture" as a graded component. This is not a checkbox - it affects marks in the 100-mark interview. Prepare: the names and characteristics of all major Rajasthani folk dances (Ghoomar, Kalbelia, Chari, Bhavai, Terah Taali, Chakri), folk music communities (Manganiyar, Langa), miniature painting schools (Mewar, Marwar, Bundi, Kishangarh styles and their visual characteristics), major festivals (Teej, Gangaur, Pushkar Mela), traditional art forms (Phad painting, Blue Pottery, Bandhani) and the historical significance of your home district. Interview panels frequently ask about the specific region the candidate comes from - know your home district's history, culture and development challenges in depth.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions - RPSC RAS 2026
Most searched questions about RPSC RAS eligibility, exam pattern, Rajasthan GK and career path answered
RPSC RAS and UPSC IAS are structurally similar (Prelims → Mains → Interview) but differ in scope and focus. IAS is an All India Service with all-India postings; RAS officers serve in Rajasthan state cadre only. IAS exam (UPSC CSE) has higher competition (10+ lakh applicants for 180 IAS posts) vs RAS (5+ lakh for 607 posts in 2026). IAS syllabus covers national topics only; RAS syllabus has 40-60% Rajasthan-specific content in every paper. IAS Mains has 9 papers including 1 optional; RAS Mains has 4 compulsory papers (no optional). IAS age limit is 32 years (General); RAS is 40 years - giving an 8-year additional window. Salary and prestige: IAS significantly higher. For Rajasthan-domicile candidates, preparing simultaneously is highly efficient - study the common 50-60% GS syllabus for both, then add Rajasthan-specific content for RAS and optional subject + essay for IAS. Using IAS preparation as the base and adding Rajasthan GK for RAS is the optimal dual-track strategy.
RPSC RAS Prelims marks are NOT counted in the final merit list. Prelims is purely a screening test. From Prelims, candidates equal to 15 times the total vacancies are shortlisted for Mains. Final merit = Mains total marks + Interview marks. The Mains has 4 compulsory papers × 200 marks each = 800 marks. The Interview/Personality Test carries 100 marks. Total final merit = 800 + 100 = 900 marks. All 4 Mains papers are compulsory and all marks count (unlike some state PSCs where language papers are only qualifying). The post allocation among the 15+ posts recruited through RAS is based on this 900-mark merit list, candidate preferences, and post-wise vacancies. A candidate ranking 50th overall may get RAS posting while a candidate at rank 200 gets RTS or Rajasthan Police Service depending on the vacancy distribution.
RPSC RAS is not conducted on a strict annual schedule - it depends on vacancy requirements from the Rajasthan government. Recent cycles: RAS 2021 (notification 2021, Prelims 2021, Mains 2023), RAS 2023 (notification 2023, Prelims 2023), RAS 2025 (Prelims February 2025), RAS 2026 (notification released 27 May 2026, applications June-July 2026). The gap between cycles is typically 1.5-2 years. There is no formal limit on the number of RPSC RAS attempts - candidates can apply as long as they remain within the age eligibility window (21-40 years General, 45 years for SC/ST/OBC of Rajasthan). The generous age limit of 40 years (General) means most candidates have 15-20 years of potential attempt window, giving 7-10 realistic attempts. Monitor rpsc.rajasthan.gov.in for official notifications and stay updated through Rajasthan Patrika (major regional newspaper) which covers RPSC exam news extensively.
Several features make RPSC RAS unique. First, the 5-option OMR system in Prelims (same as REET 2025) where blanks attract -1/3 penalty and Option 5 is the safe unattempted marker - this is unusual among state PSCs. Second, the mandatory 90% attempt rule in Prelims where leaving more than 15 questions without any markng leads to disqualification. Third, the Interview explicitly evaluates Rajasthani culture knowledge - most state PSC interviews don't have this as a formally graded component. Fourth, Rajasthan has a Vidhan Parishad (Upper House) unlike most states, making Rajasthan polity more complex than average state polity. Fifth, the RAS exam covers all 15+ diverse posts from one common examination, so candidates ranked lower in merit may still get prestigious police or revenue service posts rather than pure administrative service. Sixth, Rajasthan's unique geography (Thar Desert, IGNP, water conservation systems, desert ecology) and history (Rajput kingdoms, integration story) create a depth of state-specific knowledge requirement unlike flatter-geography states.
No - RPSC RAS Mains does not have an optional subject paper. All 4 papers are compulsory GS papers for all candidates. The 4 papers are: GS Paper I (History, Art, Culture), GS Paper II (Geography and Environment), GS Paper III (Polity, Economy and Science), and Paper IV (General Hindi and General English). This is different from UPSC CSE which has a 250-mark optional subject paper in Mains. The absence of an optional means every RAS aspirant is on exactly the same syllabus - there is no advantage from choosing a high-scoring optional subject (as happens in UPSC with subjects like Public Administration, Sociology or Geography). The playing field is purely GS knowledge and answer writing quality for RAS. This also means candidates transitioning from UPSC preparation to RAS or vice versa do not need to carry optional subject notes - the GS preparation is the entirety of the exam focus.

RPSC RAS 2026 - Complete Guide: 5-Option OMR, Prelims and Mains Pattern, Rajasthan GK, Interview and Free Mock Tests

The RPSC RAS (Rajasthan Administrative Service) 2026 exam - officially Rajasthan State and Subordinate Services Combined Competitive Examination - is Rajasthan's most prestigious civil services exam conducted by RPSC. RPSC RAS 2026 Notification released 27 May 2026 for 607 vacancies. Applications open 4 June to 3 July 2026 at rpsc.rajasthan.gov.in. Three stages: Prelims (single paper, 150 MCQs, 200 marks, 3 hours, unique 5-option OMR with 1/3 negative for wrong AND blank answers, screening only - marks not counted in merit, mandatory 90% attempt rule) → Mains (4 papers × 200 marks = 800 marks, descriptive answers, 3 hours each) → Interview (100 marks, includes Rajasthani culture knowledge evaluation). Final merit = Mains 800 + Interview 100 = 900 marks. Top candidates equal to 15 times vacancies shortlisted for Mains from Prelims.

The defining feature of RPSC RAS preparation is the Rajasthan-heavy syllabus: approximately 60% of Prelims questions are Rajasthan-specific (Rajasthan History and Culture, Geography, Polity, Economy). All three GS Mains papers (GS I History/Culture, GS II Geography, GS III Polity/Economy) have 40-50% Rajasthan content. The 5-option OMR system in Prelims means Option 5 ("unattempted") is the safe choice for uncertain questions - 0 marks with no penalty, better than blank (-1/3) or random guess (-1/3 expected). Paper IV (200 marks) covers General Hindi, General English and Essay at Senior Secondary level. The RAS interview is unique in explicitly evaluating Rajasthani culture knowledge - Ghoomar, Kalbelia, Phad painting, Blue Pottery, folk music communities, Rajput forts and traditional water systems. RPSC RAS recruits for 16+ posts including Rajasthan Administrative Service, Rajasthan Tax Service, Rajasthan Police Service, Rajasthan Accounts Service and subordinate services.

Our free RPSC RAS mock tests cover all key sections - General Studies (History, Geography, Polity, Economy, Science with Rajasthan focus), General Knowledge and Awareness (Rajasthan GK and national current affairs), General Intelligence and Reasoning (Logical Reasoning for GS Paper III), Numerical and Mathematical Ability and English Language (Paper IV English section) - available chapter-wise at zero cost at StudiesToday.com.
