Stage 1 - Computer Based Test (90 Minutes)
⚠️ Important: RRB Group D has a unique structure - General Science is a separate subject (25 marks) distinct from General Awareness. This is different from SSC exams where Science is part of GK. Negative marking is 1/3 mark (0.33) per wrong answer. The CBT has no sectional time limit - all 100 questions share 90 minutes. Physical Efficiency Test - Running Standards
✅ Key difference from SSC GD and SSC CPO PET: RRB Group D PET includes a weight lifting and carrying event in addition to the running event. The weight lifting component tests practical physical strength relevant to the track maintenance and helper roles in railways. Both events must be cleared - failing either the run or the weight carry disqualifies the candidate.
⚠️ No relaxation in PET for reserved categories. Unlike age limit where SC/ST/OBC get relaxation, the PET standards are the same for all categories within each gender. All male candidates must run 1000m in 4:15 and carry 35 kg for 100m regardless of caste category.

Both are RRB exams for Indian Railways - but they are at very different levels in terms of eligibility, pay, and work profile.

This is a strategic mistake. General Science has 25 dedicated questions - equal to Math - yet most candidates score only 12-15 here due to poor preparation. Candidates who read NCERT Class 9 and 10 Science books thoroughly consistently score 20-22 out of 25 in this section. Start PET physical training simultaneously with CBT preparation - do not wait for CBT result - The PET for Group D requires running 1000m in 4 minutes 15 seconds AND carrying 35 kg for 100 metres in 2 minutes. The weight carrying event is unique to Group D and requires specific physical conditioning - candidates who are fit for running but have not trained for weight carrying regularly fail this event. Build a daily routine from Day 1 - morning run (build up from 1 km to 3-4 km daily) and weight training (deadlifts, farmer carries) to develop the specific strength needed for the 35 kg carry. Indian Railways GK is a guaranteed scoring area - build a dedicated fact sheet - RRB Group D has a stronger Railway-specific GK bias than even RRB NTPC. Questions about railway zones and their headquarters, zonal railway museums, types of gauges (Broad, Metre, Narrow), railway speed records, Vande Bharat Express routes and features, Dedicated Freight Corridor progress, and the 18 railway zones with their headquarters appear frequently. This content is not in standard GK books. Build a Railway GK fact sheet with all zones (headquarters, states covered), major railway projects, and recent railway news. 4-6 questions per exam come from Railway-specific GK alone.

Jumbling is a unique Reasoning topic in RRB exams - practise it specifically - Jumbling (rearrangement of words to form meaningful sentences, or rearrangement of numbers/letters based on rules) is a topic that appears in RRB exams but is absent in SSC exams. Candidates preparing from SSC materials often encounter Jumbling for the first time in the actual CBT and waste time on it. Practise 20-30 Jumbling questions from RRB-specific question banks to become familiar with the question types and solve them quickly. Once understood, Jumbling questions take only 30-40 seconds each to answer.

The 1/3 negative marking means you should attempt all questions you can narrow down - RRB Group D's 1/3 negative marking (0.33 per wrong answer) is more candidate-friendly than SSC's 0.25 or 0.50 for higher-stakes questions. For a 4-option MCQ, if you can eliminate even one clearly wrong option, attempting the question gives you a positive expected score. Never leave questions blank when you can eliminate at least one option. Only skip questions where all 4 options seem equally possible - in those cases, a blank is statistically better than a random guess.

Check the medical standard of your preferred post before applying - safety posts have strict vision requirements - Posts like Track Maintainer, Pointsman, and Gateman are safety-category posts requiring A2 or A3 medical standard - including strict colour vision and specific eyesight requirements without glasses. Candidates who wear glasses or have colour blindness cannot be selected for these posts. Before applying and selecting post preferences, get a full eye examination including colour vision test. If you have colour vision deficiency, do not waste a preference on safety-category posts - focus on non-safety posts like Helper in Electrical, Hospital Attendant, or Porter which have less restrictive B1 or C2 medical standards.

This is an OR condition - any one of these qualifications is sufficient. You do not need an ITI certificate if you have passed 10th. The key difference is the weight carrying event. SSC GD PET only requires a 5 km run (for male candidates). RRB Group D PET requires a 1000m run (much shorter) AND a weight carry event - lifting 35 kg and carrying it for 100 metres within 2 minutes for male candidates (20 kg for females). The weight carry event tests functional physical strength relevant to the track maintenance and field roles in railways. Many candidates who are fit for running but have never trained for weight carrying fail this event. Yes - Group D employees have two promotion pathways to NTPC-level posts.
